This past week gave us an official WLR announcement, further proof that Arteta is a fraud, and to top it off, we all had superpowers for a day. Christmas is in a few days, and what better way to celebrate than with some new music? Here are some recent releases to run as you unwrap presents and decorate your tree.
As Friends – Gabzy
As Detty December reaches its peak, we’re seeing the usual cycle of cheating and heartbreak. If there’s one thing Lagosians can do and do well, it’s destroy relationships. As Friends delineates the gray area of confusion that most people experience during this unfortunate December cruise.
Gabzy describes a relationship with all its bells and whistles, sans the label. He sings “I’m here for a good time, not a long time, so don’t fall in love”, which effectively serves as the golden rule to any form of tryst or fling during this period. A relaxing guitar loop provides a base for this sweet yet toxic ballad, one that’s sure to soundtrack our lives this month.
Funk Spice – Zamir
No party is complete without a mosh pit, and mosh pits can’t exist without bangers like Funk Spice.
A high octane tune complete with an infectious hook, Funk Spice just does it for you. Between warning us not to fuck up the feng shui and paying homage to Jay Z, Zamir delivers a verse packed with cheeky one-liners and a clean flow.
Kno Me – Somadina feat. SGaWD
Our resident rnb powerhouse Somadina serves us another hit with her new track, Kno Me.
Kno Me is a through and through bad bitch anthem, it sees Somadina and SGaWD unload self-confident lyrics over airy synths, courtesy of 44DB Collective’s Trill Xoe. Soma switches it up with the final verse, interpolating a Doja Cat flow (and killing it) as she says “does she rap or sing? Idk I just want my pockets bigger”. Soma’s resume is effectively updated with this verse, and we can now add rapping to her long list of talents. A welcome addition to her arsenal.
Demon Diamonds – Fasina
Fasina serves us his 5th single of the year, with an autotune drenched psychedelic bop, Demon Diamonds.
Demon Diamonds has a trance-like vibe, reminiscent of Lancey Foux. There’s a calm aggression to Fasina’s tone, sounding passive and menacing as he delivers his verses, and KD’s production only enhances this quality. All in all it’s a solid track to vibe to during a smoke sesh.
Comfort Food – Efe Oraka
Heartbreak is a feeling most of us will face at some point in life, it’s a sad and inevitable reality. Off her debut EP Magic, Efe Oraka shows us the not so glamorous side of breakups, filled with calories and sadness, on Comfort Food.
Drowning our sorrows in a tub of ice cream is a common coping mechanism after a breakup, and Efe reminds us that it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit down after a nasty split, while stuffing ourselves with anything we can to numb the pain.
Little BlackBird – Uchechi Emelonye
With her debut single, Uchechi Emelyonye elucidates the beauty of being a black girl.
Little BlackBird is a song of empowerment for black girls all around the world, a reminder of their validity and place in society. The song is in the form of a piano ballad, addressed to a bird, which serves as a metaphor for the fragility and beauty of black girls.
Little BlackBird ends with the BlackBird fully grown, as Uchechi urges her to take flight, and pass on the torch.
