The Nigerian Lo-Fi community is growing exponentially and it’s a sight to see. Housing some of the country’s most authentic artists, this body of DIY performers consistently push the borders of ‘conventional’ sound to blurry edges. Aussie Maze, one of such artists, caught our eye recently with ‘Femme Fantasia’; a melancholic, emotion-evoking track, which earned him our seal of approval on our Voices in Music feature.
Now back with his first release of the year, Aussie switches out his signature somber tones for a more playful, bedroom pop palette with ‘Arya’. Over mid-tempo drums and soft-layered piano chords, the 808vic featured track sees Aussie recounting the story of meeting his now ex-partner, ‘I met this girl in St. Tropez/Right in the park like everyday/She used to smoke right in my face/Her blunt was laced with summer taste’. 808vic then taps in with an equally light-hearted and loose-lyrical verse.
With these unpredictable corona times having summer feel like a foreign concept, we can channel the summery feel off ‘Arya’ as we hope for the best.
