Soldiers in Niger have announced a coup on national TV

After being detained by members of the presidential guard since early Wednesday, soldiers in Niger claimed to have ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

“The defence and security forces have decided to put an end to the regime you are familiar with,” Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane stated in a statement shown on national television.

He stated that until further notice, a nighttime curfew would be in place from 22:00 to 5:00 local time.

Mohamed Bazoum has received the steadfast backing of both the US Secretary of State and the UN Secretary General, Antonio Blinken, and Antonio Guterres, respectively.
