Comscore, Nigeria’s official box office partner has listed ‘Sugar Rush’ earnings at N211 million in its latest weekly chart. It is now the seventh Nollywood movie to gross over N200 million and the second movie released in 2019 to have surpassed that mark. The action comedy film has been in the cinemas for since Christmas Day, racking N110 million in its first week and an additional N55 million by the third week. Sadly, Sugar Rush was removed from the cinemas by National Film and Video Censor Board (NFVCB) shortly after, prompting the digital movement #BringBackSugarRush on social media. The NFVCB responded by stating that the film was withdrawn from the cinemas because it only got a temporal approval to play.
NFVCB bans Sugar Rush Movie in the cinemas.
The moment the movie was reinstated in theatres on Thursday, January 16, 2020, it pulled in an additional N27 million and stands at N211 million in its current fifth week. The movie written and directed by Kayode Kasum follows the story of three sisters – Sugar sisters – who accidentally discover $800,000 in the house of a corrupt man. In the next couple of days, they spend the entire money only to meet their waterloo when mafias come to claim the stake of the money.
It features Adesua Etomi, Banky W, Bisola Aiyeola, and Omoni Oboli. Other castmates include Tobi Bakre, Mawuli Gavor, Toke Makinwa, Nkem Owoh, Zack Orji, and Williams Uchemba.
